If you want to carry around a lot of novels, study material, etc., without having to handle a huge stack of bulky paper publications, then ebooks are a great way of having a library of textual information at your fingertips. However, in some circumstances, your eyes can't be used for reading text via your ebook reading device (, Kobo, iPad, and others). For example, you won't be able to read while you are driving a car -- obviously, it is both dangerous and impractical to read any form of text and so you will have to wait for a safer (and more convenient) time to thumb through all those virtual pages. Makes it Easy For times when you can't read text, but need an alternative way of tapping into this kind of information, then a great solution is to use the spoken word via digital audio -- otherwise known as. By doing this, you will not only be giving your eyes a well-earned rest but also be utilizing your time more efficiently. This can be especially useful if you commute long distances for example and need to put in some study time, or simply want to listen for entertainment. Save Some Cash Rather than having to spend money on an audiobook to compliment an ebook you may already have, it is possible to use text to speech conversion programs to create your own. This type of software program uses voice synthesis to try and emulate a natural sounding voice as close as possible. The electronic voices that are created can vary in quality from annoyingly bad to very good and so there's a certain amount of experimentation you'll have to do in order to see what works best for you. Multiple Formats Once in a like MP3, you will be able to listen to your ebook on virtually any electronic device that can playback --,, smartphones,, etc. Suddenly, you'll be able to listen to the original text in a new way and in situations that would have proved difficult or impossible before; walking and exercising are just two examples. If your car only has a, you can also create an -- or even better -- an so you can listen to all your audiobooks safely while driving. Till Jacket/Getty Images According to the makers of this text to speech software program, the Russian word, Balabolka, means 'chatterer'. This application for Windows supports an impressive range of text-based file formats that it can convert which includes: TXT, DOC, PDF, ODT, AZW, ePub, CHM, HTML, FB2, LIT, MOBI, PRC, RTF, and more. If you have text copied to the clipboard, it can also read this. Balabolka uses Microsoft's Speech API (SAPI 4 and 5) to convert text into synthesized speech. There is excellent support for many languages and you can also download a portable version too from the maker's website if you want to carry this useful software program around on portable storage devices such as,, etc. Voices can be tweaked via Balabolka's interface in order to change parameters such as pitch and speed. When it comes to creating digital audio files, the program also supports a good selection of popular formats, which currently include: MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV, AAC (M4a / M4b), and (probably the for voice). An interesting feature of Balabolka is that you can save subtitled text in the LRC format or in the of the audio file. This allows you to view the text (just like lyrics) on a digital audio playing device with a screen as the audio plays -- you can then effectively have the best of both worlds! DSpeech is another free text to speech application for Windows that is surprisingly feature-rich. The program doesn't need to be installed and so you can run it from virtually anywhere. Even though the application's interface is quite simplistic, DSpeech is quite powerful and has a good selection of features. As well as being able to read files in text formats such as: txt, rtf, doc, docx, html, and a few more, you can also use DSpeech for converting your voice (via a microphone) into text -- there's a basic voice recognition engine built into the program. This is a nice feature if you want to convert your voice into text rather than recording it straight to MP3 (sometimes referred to as a ). This application (like the majority of free tools of this type) uses the Microsoft Speech API to convert text into speech. DSpeech can encode to MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, and WAV which covers most of the popular bases in the digital audio world. Another interesting (and unique) feature of DSpeech is being able to use multiple voices in the same text. This can be useful if you want to create dialog between different characters for a book or script for instance. If you are specifically looking for a simple 'no frills' text to, then Classlesoft's offering is worth a close look. It's light-weight, fast, and has a clear interface that is very straightforward to use. It only supports files in the.txt format, but if you have a lot to convert, this program makes the whole process a breeze. You can quickly queue up multiple files for automatic batch conversion to MP3 before hitting the big red start button. There is no option to change voice profiles in this utility, but clicking on the settings menu enables you to change the pitch, speed, and volume of the synthesized speech for your particular needs. Like many of the software applications in this list, you can use TTSReader as a real-time text speaking tool (using the Microsoft SAPI4 and SAPI5 system) as well as a converter. The program has a well laid-out interface that is intuitive to use and comes with a nice selection of options. TTSReader supports files in the TXT or RTF format and it can convert these into either. Although TTSReader's file format support isn't as rich as some other free text to speech applications, it does offer the ability to convert multiple documents in a quick and simple way which may win you over. There's also a handy skip feature which you can use to skip either a sentence or entire paragraph which is useful if you don't require every word to be read out.

If you want your Kindle to display every page in the PDF as if it were a graphic, just email the.pdf file to your Kindle's address without a subject line. That will maintain the formatting and graphics, but the font size may be too small to read. Unfortunately, Calibre's own email system was all screwed up when I tried it. You'll just have to send them manually. Now click on an entry in your Calibre library and choose 'convert books' from the top bar. In the upper right hand corner, make sure the 'output format' is 'MOBI.' Click OK, and wait until the 'Jobs' number at the lower right of the main screen goes from 1 down to 0. Now select the title again and click 'Save to disk.' Pick the folder you want to save it in. If you want to maximize your cut of sales, maintain absolute creative control, or participate in non-traditional copyright structures, self-publishing an eBook might be right for you. • This route is much more difficult than it sounds. It will require you to do all of your own marketing and editing, as well as deal with sellers. Though it will allow you more control, it is significantly more work. • Creative Commons licenses are useful for those planning on self-publishing. This will give you a template for the legalese to protect your work, as well as providing the freedom to decide how tightly you wish to control the work. Go with a traditional publisher. You may not want to deal with publishing your eBook on your own. You may not have time to devote to marketing, design, editing, or the formatting of an eBook. There is nothing wrong with this. If self-publishing sounds too complicated, you can find a traditional publisher to produce and sell your eBook. • Keep in mind that a traditional publisher will take a larger cut from your book sales and will often exert a certain level of control over the content and copyright. • Publishers will often be reluctant to take new authors. If you want to, get an agent who will help find a publisher for you and advocate for the quality of your work. An agent will also help you negotiate a good contract. Edit your book. Editing is one of the most important aspects of publishing your book. A poorly edited book will not attract readers, reviewers, or potential publishers. Editing gives your eBook a professional appearance and makes it more pleasant to read. • Fix all grammar and spelling issues. Too many grammar and spelling problems can render a text unreadable. Use a word processor like Microsoft Word or Google Docs to find spelling and basic grammar mistakes. The programs are not, however, a replacement for human eyes. They can only detect spelling errors for words that do not exist. If you have simply typed the wrong their/there/they’re, the computer will probably not catch it. Grammar errors are much the same. Read the book yourself, all the way though. This will help you catch grammar and spelling mistakes but it can also give you a better sense of how the book fits together as a whole. Look for scenes which don’t work next to each other, characters who seem to change personality from one chapter to the next, or major changes in writing style. Since authors usually write their books over long periods of time and rarely write them straight through, it can lead to pieces of story that don’t fit next to each other. • Read it aloud. Once you have read the text all the way through, one of the best editing methods is to read the text aloud. This will keep your brain from auto-correcting missing words, incorrect words, grammar and spelling errors. It can also alert you to unnatural-sounding dialogue. Have someone proof it. Have a fellow writer read it through, from beginning to end. They will be able to look at it from a writer’s standpoint, looking for weaknesses in structure, characterization, and word choice. This works best if it is a neutral party, but an objective friend can work just as well. • Have someone read it that normally reads books in the same genre. Only someone who reads similar books will really be able to appreciate your book. They will help you determine if you have written it in such a way that it reaches its intended audience and connects with them. Decide your distributor. Once you have decided the device or devices, you will need to decide your distributor. Where do you want your eBook sold? You can make it available on websites like Barnes and Noble, Amazon, or Google Play. You can also have it on lesser known eBook distributors or on its own website entirely. • If you sell the book on it’s own website, you will gain a larger cut of the profits but miss out on a larger audience and marketing tools. • Again, certain distributors offer incentives to keep your book exclusive to their service. Investigate these programs to help you make your decision. • Kindle Direct Publishing: this is Amazon’s distribution service. • Smashwords: this service publishes to most major booksellers, with the exception of Kindle. • Nook Press: this is Barnes and Noble’s distribution service. • Lulu: this service is notable for distributing eBooks to the Apple store, an otherwise complicated process. Understand how ereaders work. It is important to understand how ereaders work and how text displays on the screen. In understanding what is expected, you will know how your own eBook should look when you are done with formatting. • To get an idea of what eBooks look like, get or borrow an ereader. Reciprocal borrowing privileges at the Grimsby Public Library are for Hamilton residents only and not for out-of-town memberships purchased at the Hamilton Public Library. This limited membership does not allow a patron to partake in any other services or programs offered by the libraries. Why do I have to register for reciprocal borrowing privileges? Are there differences in how I use the other library? When you use your reciprocal borrowing privileges you may find that some borrowing practices are slightly different. For example, there may be different due dates, or different limits on the quantities of material types borrowed. The NYRB Classics series is designedly and determinedly exploratory and eclectic, a mix of fiction and non-fiction from different eras and times and of various sorts. The series includes nineteenth century novels and experimental novels, reportage and belles lettres, tell-all memoirs and learned studies, established classics and cult favorites, literature high, low, unsuspected, and unheard of. NYRB Classics are, to a large degree, discoveries, the kind of books that people typically run into outside of the classroom and then remember for life. Inevitably literature in translation constitutes a major part of the NYRB Classics series, simply because so much great literature has been left untranslated into English, or translated poorly, or deserves to be translated again, much as any outstanding book asks to be read again. The series started in 1999 with the publication of Richard Hughes's A High Wind in Jamaica. NYRB Classics includes new translations of canonical figures such as Euripides, Dante, Balzac, and Chekhov; fiction by modern and contemporary masters such as Vasily Grossman, Mavis Gallant, Daphne du Maurier, Stefan Zweig, and Upamanyu Chatterjee; tales of crime and punishment by George Simenon and Kenneth Fearing; masterpieces of narrative history and literary criticism, poetry, travel writing, biography, cookbooks, and memoirs from such writers as Norman Mailer, Lionel Trilling, and Patrick Leigh Fermor; and unclassifiable classics on the order of J. Ackerley's My Dog Tulip and Robert Burton's The Anatomy of Melancholy. Fall 2009 sees the publication of the series' first graphic novel, Poem Strip by Dino Buzzati, translated into English for the first time. Published in handsome uniform trade paperback editions, almost all the 250 NYRB Classics included in this collection feature an introduction by an outstanding writer, scholar, or critic of our day. Taken as a whole, NYRB Classics may be considered a series of books of unrivaled variety and quality for discerning and adventurous readers. This collection includes one each of the following titles: A High Wind in Jamaica by Richard Hughes Jakob von Gunten by Robert Walser The Living Thoughts of Kierkegaard by Soren Kierkegaard Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner My Dog Tulip by J.R. Don Carpenter's Hard Rain Falling is a tough-as-nails account of being down and out, but never down for good — a Dostoyevskian tale of crime, punishment, and the pursuit of an ever-elusive redemption. The novel follows the adventures of Jack Levitt, an orphaned teenager living off his wits in the fleabag hotels and seedy pool halls of Portland, Oregon. Jack befriends Billy Lancing, a young black runaway and pool hustler extraordinaire. A heist gone wrong gets Jack sent to reform school, from which he emerges embittered by abuse and solitary confinement. In the meantime Billy has joined the middle class — married, fathered a son, acquired a business and a mistress. 41And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42So Ahab went off to. So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, 'Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.' ” 45Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. But neither Jack nor Billy can escape their troubled pasts, and they will meet again in San Quentin before their strange double drama comes to a violent and revelatory end. About the Author. Don Carpenter (1931-1995) was born in Berkeley, California, and grew up on the West Coast. He served in the air force during the Korean War, attended the University of Portland, and received a B.S. From Portland State College and an M.A. From San Francisco State College. Carpenter, his wife, Martha, and their two daughters settled in Mill Valley, near San Francisco, and he became good friends with the local writers Evan Connell and, especially, Richard Brautigan. His first book, Hard Rain Falling, was published in 1966 and was followed by nine other novels as well as several collections of short stories. Carpenter also wrote for the movies and television and spent a good deal of time in Hollywood, the subject of several of his novels. Plagued by poor health in his later years, he committed suicide at the age of sixty-four. George Pelecanos is the author of sixteen novels and was a writer, story editor, and producer on the HBO series The Wire. This is the first novel by the exceptional writer Don Carpenter. They only get better as his voice matures. Unfortunately, Hard Rain Falling is the only one now in print. Will somebody correct that? And will somebody also try to get his last novel, completed just before his death, into print? These studies of character and place not only provide pleasure to the reader but also occupy a unique position as historical records of the segments of American life that are their settings. A nineteenth century French priest discovers something in his mountain village at the foot of The Pyrenees which enables him to amass and spend a fortune of millions of pounds. The tale seems to begin with buried treasure and then turns into an unprecedented historical detective story - a modern Grail quest leading back through cryptically coded parchments, secret societies, the Knights Templar, the Cathar heretics of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries and a dynasty of obscure French kings deposed more than 1,300 years ago. The author's conclusions are persuasive: at the core is not material riches but a secret - a secret of explosive and controversial proportions, which radiates out from the little Pyrenees village all the way to contemporary politics and the entire edifice of the Christian faith. It involves nothing less than. The Holy Grail. HOW TO GET EBOOK 1. BROWSE The Book Title On Search Form 2. Click Download or Read 3. Refresh Page if you Not Found The Books 4. Google Scholar Citations provide a simple way for authors to keep track of citations to their articles. You can check who is citing your publications, graph citations over time, and compute several citation metrics. You can also make your profile public, so that it may appear in Google Scholar results when people search for your name, e.g.,. Best of all, it's quick to set up and simple to maintain - even if you have written hundreds of articles, and even if your name is shared by several different scholars. You can add groups of related articles, not just one article at a time; and your citation metrics are computed and updated automatically as Google Scholar finds new citations to your work on the web. You can choose to have your list of articles updated automatically or review the updates yourself, or to manually update your articles at any time. It's quick and free. • First, sign to your Google account, or create one if you don't yet have one. We recommend that you use a personal account, not an account at your employer, so that you can keep your profile for as long as you wish. • Once you've signed in to your Google account, the will ask you to confirm the spelling of your name, and to enter your affiliation, interests, etc. We recommend that you also enter your university email address which would make your profile eligible for inclusion in Google Scholar search results. • On the next page, you'll see groups of articles written by people with names similar to yours. Click 'Add all articles' next to each article group that is yours, or 'See all articles' to add specific articles from that group. If you don't see your articles in these groups, click 'Search articles' to do a regular Google Scholar search, and then add your articles one at a time. Feel free to do as many searches as you like. • Once you're done with adding articles, it will ask you what to do when the article data changes in Google Scholar. You can either have the updates applied to your profile automatically, or you can choose to review them beforehand. In either case, you can always go to your profile and make changes by hand. • Finally, you will see your profile. This is a good time to add a few finishing touches - upload your professional looking photo, visit your university email inbox and click on the verification link, double check the list of articles, and, once you're completely satisfied, make your profile public. Voila - it's now eligible to appear in Google Scholar when someone searches for your name! Select the 'Add' option from the Actions menu. Search for your articles using titles, keywords, or your name. To add one article at a time, click 'Search articles' and then 'Add article' next to the article you wish to add. Your citation metrics will update immediately to account for the articles you added. If your search doesn't find the right article, click 'Add article manually'. Then, type in the title, the authors, etc., and click 'Save'. Keep in mind that citations to manually added articles may not appear in your profile for a few days. To add a group of related articles, click 'Search article groups' and then 'Add all articles' next to the group you wish to add. If you have written articles under different names, with multiple groups of colleagues, or in different journals, you may need to select multiple groups. Your citation metrics will update immediately to account for the groups you added. Click the title of the article and then click the 'Edit' button. When you finish your changes, click the 'Save' button. If you've made substantial changes to the article, please keep the following in mind. • The list of 'Scholar articles' at the bottom of the page may no longer match the article you've edited. We recommend that you review this list and 'unmerge' the Scholar articles that no longer correspond to your article. Scholar articles affect the computation of your 'Cited by' counts and citation metrics. • As with manual additions of articles, it may take several days for all citations to the edited article to be collected in your profile. Citation Machine™ helps students and professionals properly credit the information that they use. Cite your book in Harvard Reference format 1 (author-date) format for free. You can speed up the process by adding the appropriate article from Google Scholar and then merging it with your version; then, your citation metrics will update right away. • It's possible that the article you've edited was already in your profile as a separate record. We recommend that you merge duplicate records - click the 'Title/Author' column header to sort your articles by title, select the checkboxes next to the duplicate entries, which should now be adjacent, and then select the 'Merge' option from the Actions menu. You also need to add a verified email address at your university or institution. To be eligible for inclusion in Google Scholar search results, your profile needs to be public and needs to have a verified email address at your university (non-institutional email addresses, such as gmail.com, hotmail.com, aol.com, yahoo.com, qq.com, etc., are not suitable for this purpose). To add a verified email to your profile, click the 'Edit' link next to 'No verified email', add your email address at your institution and click 'Save'. We will send you an email message with a verification link. Once you click on this link, the email address will be marked verified. Your profile will now be eligible for inclusion in Google Scholar search results. Rest assured, we will not display your email address on your public profile. Nor will we sell it, trade it, or use it to send you email unrelated to Google Scholar. Your 'Cited by' counts come from the Google Scholar index. You can change the articles in your profile, but citations to them are computed and updated automatically as we update Google Scholar. To change the 'Cited by' counts in your profile, you would need to have them updated in Google Scholar. Google Scholar generally reflects the state of the web as it is currently visible to our search robots and to the majority of users. If some of the citations to your article are not included, chances are that the citing articles are not accessible to our search robots or are formatted in ways that make it difficult for our indexing algorithms to identify their bibliographic data or references. To fix this, you'll need to identify the specific citing articles with indexing problems and work with the publisher of these articles to make the necessary changes (see our for details). For most publishers, it usually takes 6-9 months for the changes to be reflected in Google Scholar; for very large publishers, it can take much longer. This happens when the Google Scholar search index has changed, and we have been unable to match an article in your profile with the new index. Most of the time, this is because it was considered to be a duplicate of some other article in your profile, but we weren't able to determine which one. Occasionally, the article may have been removed from Google Scholar entirely, e.g., because it's no longer available on the web, or because articles that reference it have become unavailable to our search robots. To check if the article is a duplicate, go to your profile, click the 'Title/Author' header to sort by title, and look for the article in question. If the same article is indeed listed multiple times, you can safely accept the suggestion to delete the unmatched entry. However, if it isn't a duplicate entry, you can choose to keep it in your profile. Though, since it is not matched in Google Scholar, its 'Cited by' count will be zero. Note that your decision to keep an unmatched entry in your profile will not reinstate the entry in Google Scholar. See the for help on including your articles in Google Scholar. The best way to fix it depends on whether the problem appears when you search Google Scholar, or only when you view your profile. First, try to reproduce the problem in regular Google Scholar search results. E.g., search Google Scholar for the title of the article in question, or for your name. If your article is listed incorrectly there, or if you believe its 'Cited by' count is off, then refer to the. Chances are that you need to talk to your publisher to have it corrected. If, however, the problem is specific to your profile, and does not affect normal Google Scholar search results, then please do the details.
